I recently saw this DVD and I thought it was great. Roy Dean is a BJJ and aikido black belt, and in this DVD he blended one art with another without a hitch.

You can get some nice ideas just by watching his clips:

For anyone interested, I wrote a longer review of the DVD here:

One thing I noticed after watching this stuff was that Dean seems to have no trouble pulling of the wristlocks in rolling/randori, something that I've been assured by many aikido people that can't be done. I've been told many times that randori can't exist in aikido like it does in judo or BJJ, yet here is someone that can make it work.

Hmmm....

Roy also studied at the Kodokan and is a 1st Dan in Judo. The style of aikido he studied, IIRC, was aikijitsu. (If you search the forums here, you can maybe find the post I did a few years ago re: his deshi diaries)

Not that this invalidates what you're saying in any way

PS: You'll like this one too (tai chi grappling)

I have his Blue Belt Requirements DVD and it is great. Its definitely possible to use wristlocks during ne-waza randori.

I'm not so sure it is safely possible to do tachi-waza randori with wrist locks. Its a small and relatively weak joint and easy to damage.

Roy Dean seems like an awesome person and good balanced fighter.

No, he is straight up Aikikai Aikido. He also has trained in forms of Gendai Jujutsu.

From his bio:

Roy Dean began training in martial arts at the age of 16 when he moved to Japan as an exchange student. While there he received his shodan (first degree black belt) in Kodokan Judo.

At age 19 he began training in Aikikai Aikido under Kalvin Koshiyama, eventually serving as uchideshi (live in student) under Julio Toribio. By age 24, he had received his shodan in Aikikai Aikido, and Enshin Itto-Ryu Batto Jutsu (Iaido), as well as a sandan (third degree blackbelt) in Seibukan Jujutsu.

Great find. I just saw an article on him at the back of Gracie Mag. Wristlocks work! I've been using them for years and the older I get, the more I go for them because is saves my body.
