Can somebody give me some info on this martial art?

There seems to be a lot of variants of traditional styles. I've even noticed some "Grand Masters" with their OWN styles, their names included in the name of the martial art style...

Whats the deal??? How can I recognize what is real and what is McDojo rhetoric. I mainly wish to know this so I can know what techniques and practices are done under all these various MA styles, in this case, Can-Ryu Jiu-jitsu...

thanks in advance

Can-ryu jiu jitsu was developed in the early '60's by George Sylvain. Originally a mix of Chito-ryu karate and Kawaishi judo, with some military combatives, it has evolved to include PPCT and kickboxing. George was an early trainer of Jean-Yves Theriault. There is also a different version known as Can-ryu 2000, with less emphasis on throws.

It is a basic "meat and potatoes" style of jiu jitsu. Generally not flashy techniques, working on a blow throw blow concept.

Where were you considering taking Can-ryu?

Most throws are similar to judo, there may be slight variations in the throw itself. Biggest difference would be in the use of striking, instead of off-balancing for the kuzushi. Less emphasis on randori than in a judo club, most techniques are taught and practiced as separate techniques, ie escape from a wrist grab, hair hold, bear hug, etc. Lots of small joint(wrist, finger) manipulations for come alongs and lockups.
