Hiyas,
I am very interested in trying Kendo. I was hoping some people here who do Kendo as well as Judo could help me with some questions.
Would Kendo compliment Judo? I am interested in learning Japanese swordmanship, would Kendo be the best thing to learn?
I've done judo for 20 years and kendo for 7-8.
They definitely compliment each other. They are closely related in many ways, although these are getting blurred over time.
The competitive concept is the same: i.e. sudden death. But kendo has 2 ippons, but judo only one.
The grip on the sword is the same one you take on the opponent's gi, also using the smallest fingers for control.
The uchikomi training concept is the same, but in kendo it is called suburi and done alone as well as with a partner.
But kinetically they are very different activities, and I don't think that proficiency in one helps the other one out at all. :(
They are completely different kinds of strength and motions.
However, there would certainly be something to say for grip strength being common to both of them. :)
You know you can practice your kendo at home by sitting on the floor and doing the cuts in the air. I still enjoy doing this frequently to keep in shape.
The nice thing with kendo too is that it makes you adept at using quite a few different weapons.
Kendo is cool! :)
