Your a lucky so and so for having the opportunity...

I posted the question to the Kendo World Forum. Someone posted this humorous reply:

"It is difficult to do uchimata in bogu. The do really digs into your hip. Best to do the two arts at different times of the day."

hahahaha...touche!!!

I do them both at the same time. My dad did kendo, so he teaches me a little, and we're looking for a place with kids.

Why in the world would you do that? Other than great hand - eye coordination practice, I don't think the gross and fine body movements are complementary at all, but I've never practiced it myself. I may be wrong, but kendo, it seems to me, is completely at odds with judo - the stance is high, bouncing, floating, taptaptap, flit by on your little tippytoes...

I see it all the time, practice another art with a lot of kendoka, my mother could sweep their feet.

Honestly? Waste of time. I don't get the art at all, it's so divorced from reality.

But a great joke, anyhow.

NBK, what if we like them both? You can do soccer and basketball at the same time, but they are complete opposites.

I like drinking and driving, too, but try to keep them apart. It's so unpleasant when they meet.....

Indulge yourself.... as you may be able to tell, I'm not a fan of kendo, but lots of friends here in Tokyo are rabid about it. I'm happy for anybody practicing any martial art, you asked for thoughts on training both. It will build up very interesting musculature in your upper body - a friend carries a topless photo of his wife around, she's a serious kendoka, and looks fab! unfortunately it's a back shot of her in a pose to show off her lats and shoulders, not her pecs. dry.gif

And as a practical matter, the gear is a pain to haul around, and smells like a kitty litter box after a few months of real practice. If it's a family affair get serious about the bags because you'll need them.

Been there, done that. It's OK to practice them both, but difficult to be introduced to both at the same time.
