Wow. This guy really seems to hit on both of the notoriously bad martial arts, Aikido and wing chun and its million derivatives, at the same time. I really didn't think one could combine the two arts for teh super suck. This guy is almost like Optimus Prime, except he is made of fail and suck instead of awesome living, morphing robots.

Rather sad, there is more bounce than the Taekwondo, yet I have seen similar moves in Ki Aikido. I do wonder how you actually get a student to behave in such a bizarre manner. I once saw a senior British Aikido Shihan at a BAB national seminar lay on the mat and his ukie would catch his big toe, the Shihan threw the super compliant ukie all over the mat with his big toe approx 10 or 12 times, it was most bizarre all the more because he was serious.

It's obvious the first sign of "things not being quite right" would be all the men in those long red skirts. The stronger willed (and not readily influenced) individuals who refused to wear the "uniform" were probably forbidden from attending.

I was going to make a post hypothesisng that the ukes in this video had a lot of similarities with "true believers" that speak in tongues etc and ask if its possible that they have so much vested in believing in chi/ki/"an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together." that their subconsiousnesses take over and they bounce around like prats because inside their heads its actually real. I was going to compare it to talking in tongues, handling snakes, faith healing...

I have seen similiar on youtube, never personally, we get scolded from doing a jumping ukemi when he should only do "normal" breakfall... on a personal note i would very much like to know if your son is still pursuing an mma career in the uk, he was having a match last time we spoke, how did he do? I would be willing to have a go at throwing him. He might break my wrist, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go leaping around like a dog getting attacked by yellow jackets.

There seems to be many styles of aikido. One fellow I sparred with a ways back talked a bit about this ... he came from a style which he said had fully resisting randori (he sparred quite well, so I'm inclined to believe him). But what he said about some styles of aikido sound not too different from this video ... he even mentioned that there are tapes of the founder of aikido at the end of his life doing "techniques at a distance", which he thought were pretty embarrassing but might have been in a different context (ie showing principles rather than the people involved really believing there was some sort of magic going on).
I suspect though that you can find guys like the guy on this video in any discipline ... there's always someone willing to make profit off of people who are desperate to believe.

Well, let's be clear about this one. First of all, it's some Hong Kong guy named Peter Yeung who came to the UK some years back, hopped off the plane, decided he didn't want to be a waiter in a restaurant, and so he started "teaching tai chi", among other things New Age. Most of his students are UK flower children. I.e., this is not about Aikido, in this case (I'm not an Aikidoist, BTW). I once saw Peter at a Chinese martial-arts tournament in the US running around taking workshops to gather more material to "reveal" to his students. He used to wear sunglasses all the time so that he would not hurt anyone with his chi. Or some such. Bear in mind that for every person into doing kinky sex, there's always some willing partners who want to have such things done to them.

I think everyone realizes this is just about an individual doing a con, and not something that represents any legitimate learning. It sort of reminds me of the scam George Dillman was doing with his "human stun gun" routine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar1yXYOsxQk

I would agree with you. Also, to some extent, a lot of the people who demonstrate the so-called "hard qi" skills often utilize what seem to be standard laws of physics (e.g., increasing the area over which a force is dissipated, utilizing the fact that mass dissipates kinetic energy, etc.) in order to give the impression that they have something more than just practice and conditioning.

My son Rik is still training in MMA with Alec Read and has his first ` official ` fight at a big venue at Portsmouth in November . I will post more when I have more information or maybe a flyer. You may find the video of interest I have just added to http://www.aikidoellisvideo.magnify.net titled " Capoiera Fighter " ?
Aiki_man, I have been involved with the martial arts for 51 years now and I can't do any of these `tricks` that we see from these charlatans, perhaps I just don't get the special kind of students that would go along with all the BS, I do wonder where they find these people.

Thanks for the reply! has for the video... BUAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... SORRY COULDNT HELP IT!!! I noticed you have footage of chiba sensei, he was one of my teachers sensei too, or at least he did a couple of stages here (portugal) in the late 70's early 80's.
I think some people really want to believe, and ask no proof or are "hipnotized" or something, i guess making a living is easier that way and so these quacks appear, to be honest what bothers me the most is that as soon has some people hear the word ki they relate it aikido almost imediatly.

A teacher/school is like a filter. People come through the school; the ones who are attracted to the man and/or the presentation stay. The ones who can't tolerate the place will leave. Sooner of later the school becomes a self-reinforcing feedback mechanism because a certain type of person dominate the student numbers (the "family") and people who "don't fit" are driven off or encouraged to leave (reminds me of some internet forums). Finding the kind of people that follow Peter Yeung isn't that hard.... I've seen teachers/schools/styles packed with loyal, unthinking minions in almost every martial art. In one degree or another, it's more common than one would suppose.

I believe that the Ki Aikido people are responsible for 99% of the ridicule they bring upon themselves. In the late 1950's I heard Abbe Sensei use a rare word in those days " Ki ", I asked him " Sensei, what is Ki " he replied abruptly " I teach you Ki in my technique, so you need not ask about Ki until you are dan grade " End of subject forever.
TK Chiba Shihan is for me one of the true Budo masters. I was his assistant from 1967 to 1972 His hero was Tadashi Abe Sensei, who I think was the hardest teacher I have ever met. We spoke of this a few weeks ago when I was invited as a guest by Chiba Sensei with Derek Eastman Sensei and Haydn Foster Sensei to a dinner to celebrate his 50 years of Aikido. In his speech his first words were to acknowledge the three of us for our work as pioneers of British Aikido, something the crass governing BAB body the British Aikido Board has always failed to do. It was good to see Harada Sensei there as well.
It is worth remembering a statement from the previous BAB chairman Toni Davis. " We the British Aikido Board are not the custodians of the history of British Aikido, we therefore have no interest in the same !! "
oh man! this is painful to watch! I knew this had to happen sometime soon - wrapping up bits of bad aikido/wing chun/ki around the trappings of Tibetan Buddhism (those maroon monk robes, the logo, prayer flags, what not). I'm from a Tibetan Buddhist background and lemme tell ya, if the monks and nuns in our Himalayan Buddhist monasteries saw this clip their jaws would drop. We've heard of some whacky practices that our form of Buddhism is associated with at certain levels, but man, this takes the cake!
Yellow Bamboo, George Dillman, now these guys, man, where do they come from? whack jobs!

It certainly isn't just restricted to internal arts, though I think you get more of it simply because there is less testing ... ie if your boxing coach tells you he has amazing techniques and skills to teach you but all of his athletes fail miserably in the ring you tend to get suspicious. The internal arts promise much more than a purely physical art (ie what could potentially be gained from them is greater than what could be gained from a physical art), and I think that draws in desperate people, and people who are willing to take advantage of it. You see the same thing among people peddling miracle cures in medicine ... people want to believe.
I've been to one amazing acupuncturist who helped me with back issues that nothing else would touch, and who believed in the internal arts. However, he was pretty adamant that they should work whether the subject believes or not, and that I should monitor my progress under his care (patiently of course) rather than "believing" in him.
